As workplaces continue to transform at pace, HR professionals are being called upon to ‘lead in a new way’. Marking International HR Day 2025 on 20 May, the European Association for People Management (EAPM) is urging the people profession to embrace a fresh approach to leadership that’s inclusive, emotionally intelligent, and adaptable to change.
The message is clear: leadership today goes far beyond simply managing people. It’s about guiding individuals, teams, and entire organisations through complexity and change—while fostering innovation, empathy, and belonging.
With hybrid work models, increasingly global teams, and growing demands for better work-life integration, the EAPM believes HR has a central role in helping shape leaders who can navigate the new world of work.
Leadership is no longer static
Berna Öztinaz, President of the EAPM, CHRO at Genel Energy, and WFPMA Board Member, puts it simply: leadership must evolve.
“As has happened throughout history, leadership must evolve with the needs of the workforce and the world around us,” she explains. “By embracing a people-centred approach that champions continuous learning, diverse perspectives, empowerment, and inclusivity, HR professionals can ensure that leaders are ready to face the challenges and opportunities of our future.”
Öztinaz believes that HR professionals have the power to help build organisations that don’t just survive, but thrive—where leadership becomes a vehicle for growth, connection, and innovation.
Inclusivity as a business imperative
Mary Connaughton, Director of CIPD Ireland and member of the International HR Day working group, echoes this view. She describes inclusive leadership as not just a trend, but a necessity.
“Leaders who prioritise inclusivity build stronger teams, drive better business outcomes, and cultivate a workplace culture that attracts top talent. HR can guide leadership in understanding the importance of inclusivity and how to integrate it into daily practices,” Connaughton says.
That means encouraging diverse leadership styles, recognising the unique value every employee brings, and ensuring inclusion is embedded in the day-to-day experience of work.
